Episode 1 - Pilot [Field Report]

SCOTT BLEVINS: We see you've been with us just over two years.

SCULLY: Yes, sir.

SCOTT BLEVINS: You went to medical school but you chose not to practice. How'd you come to work for the F.B.I.?

SCULLY: Well, sir, I was recruited out of medical school. Um, my parents still think it was an act of rebellion, but, uh... I saw the F.B.I. as a place where I could distinguish myself.

THIRD MAN: Are you familiar with an agent named Fox Mulder?

SCULLY: Yes, I am.

THIRD MAN: How so?

SCULLY: By reputation. He's an Oxford educated Psychologist, who wrote a monograph on serial killers and the occult, that helped to catch Monty Props in 1988. Generally thought of as the best analyst in the violent crimes section. He had a nickname at the academy... Spooky Mulder.

SCOTT BLEVINS: What I'll also tell you is that Agent Mulder has developed a consuming devotion to an unassigned project outside the bureau mainstream. Are you familiar with the so-called "X-Files?"

SCULLY: I believe they have to do with unexplained phenomena.

SCOTT BLEVINS: More or less. The reason you're here, Agent Scully, is we want you to assist Mulder on these X-Files. You will write field reports on your activities, along with your observations on the validity of the work.

Agent Donald and Agent Chelsea are on a plane heading to Oregon when the plane hits severe turbulence. Donald doesn't even wake up but Chelsea is shaken. She looks towards the cockpit and yells: 'Pilot'

X-FILE # UNKNOWN

MY FILE # X33-1.01

1st category is
SNOW TRAX:
Mark Snows music that was in this episode,
but was not on the sound track.

Todays Snow TraX are called:
1121
Implant
The Other 2 Graves
What Are They?
The Woods
It's happening Again
The Orange X
Scully's Entrance
The Meeting (History is Made)

A few of these tracks have a strong 'John Carpenter' sound,
like in the movies THE FOG and HALLOWEEN. Very eerie but
fitting well with the episode.
Mark Snows music seems to take a slight change in course
after the music for PILOT, to more of the 'Snowy' that we know.

*One note: Some clips may sound similar.
This is because some songs were played more than once in the episode, but I still recorded both parts.

To get these Snow TraX without me talking over them,
plus other projects, just launch iTunes and subscribe to
Snow TraX.

ZERO SUM:
Pluses and minuses that don't add up to anything.

Like most people, I really like this episode because
it has a lot of firsts.
The episode would be great by itself but being the 1st X-File,
it's place in history is cemented.

On Ray Soames: The body in Ray Soames' grave looked like an alien, not a human or ape. It also was in advanced stages of decomposition so it had to have been there for a while - or at least dead for a while and then put there.
Either way there was a cover-up... which makes the X-Files so great.

Speaking of 'cover-ups':
Here's the first mention of a government cover-up in the X-Files:

SCULLY:
"You didn't mention yesterday, this case has already been investigated."

MULDER:
"Yeah, the FBI got involved after the first three deaths when local authorities failed to turn up any evidence. Our boys came out here, spent a week, enjoyed the local salmon which, with a little lemon twist, is just to die for, if you'll pardon the expression. Without explanation, they were called back in. The case was reclassified and buried in the X-Files, till I dug it up last week."

My favorite part is at the end when C.S.M. is putting the implant into a storage container in the huge Pentagon vault, with Mark Snows music creating a "this is very important" feeling to the scene.

MULDERIZMS:
Mulder: It's probably a safe bet Ray Soames never made the Varsity
        Basketball team.

X-IMPACT: BY AGENT JAMES
[Impact that the episode had on the audience]

The Fox network first of all denied Chris Carter's request to broadcast the X-Files. But Carter forked out his own money to make the pilot episode and Fox immediately changed their minds plus critics also liked it as it was a little higher budgeted but the pilot is to draw people in.

MYTHOMETER:
Monster, Hybrid or MythArc

MYTHARC***
STRONG HYBRID
WEAK HYBRID
MONSTER

THE SEQUELIZER:
The potential the episode had for a sequel

Pilot had a HIGH potential for a sequel because of the
unidentified object found in Ray Soames' nasal cavity,
and the mysterious activity in the woods.
Plus, it's a Mythology so subsequent Mytharcs are kind of
sequels.

Finally,
MY 1-10 RATING:

Compared to other Mythologies I give Pilot an 8,
very good but they get better.
Compared to ALL X-Files episodes I give it a 9.
Compared to other shows on TV it's probably a 10.

So...
Pending any further evidence, this case,
